My Top-10 of 70s rock bands

My Top-10 of 70s rock bands

Here's my personal list of favorite 70s rock bands.

I based my list on really two things that were important to me:

  • Guitar driven RocknRoll
  • A great show

Some of these bands had both while a few had one or the other. I bet you can figure out which is which. I put one song after each band that I like; there's too many to name them all. I think this is one thing we all can agree on.

Slade

The real kings of glam rock. The group had a number of smash hits, mainly in the UK, and were known for their hilarious outfits, misspelled song titles, catchy tunes and hard rocking live shows. Read more...
Song: Mama Weer All Crazee Now

Deep Purple

Most music experts recognize Deep Purple as one of the bands that developed heavy metal and hard rock, but their songs had classical influences as well. They were huge in the 70s and still perform today, though their line-up has changed a couple of times throughout the years. Read more...
Song: Space Truckin

Led Zeppelin

Another band from the UK that are regarded as the founding fathers of hard rock, but had a far more distinguished sound than most bands in the genre. Famous for incorporating blues, folk and world music, Led Zeppelin became a true legend with a string of classic rock albums. Read more...
Song: Rock and Roll

Gibson guitar AC/DC

Australian rock band that is still very much alive and kickin', and even today adored by young kids (and their fathers!). Heavy rock and roll, with powerful guitar riffs from founding member Angus Young. Did you know that only Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' sold more copies worldwide than AC/DC's 'Back in Black'? Read more...
Song: It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna RocknRoll)

The Who

Formed in the UK, in the early 60s, but yet one of the best and biggest 70s rock bands, thanks to ambitious albums such as 'Quadrophenia' and 'The Who by Numbers'. Their drummer Keith Moon was one of the greatest rock musicians in history and The Who never really recovered from his untimely death in 1978.
Song: My Generation

Rolling Stones

They started as the dangerous, blues-based alternative to the Merseybeat of The Beatles and kept on producing hit records even after softening the tone of their gritty rock sound. Though much of their best work was released in the 60s, they were still one of the most exciting 70s rock bands.
Song: Sympathy for the Devil

KISS

Hilarious make up, outlandish live performances and some of the best rock and roll ever produced: that's what sums up KISS. They were one of the most successful 70s rock bands from the US, and Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons still perform as KISS. Read more...
Song: I Was Made For Lovin You

Alice Cooper

Alter ego of Vincent Furnier. His shows featured guillotines, fake blood, a boa constrictor and baby dolls being killed. He mixed shock and horror with rock and roll, and he was always good fun to watch. And yes, he had a bunch of great songs, too. Read more...
Song: Under My Wheels

ZZ Top

Two beards and a moustache from Texas. The world's most popular powertrio had their biggest success in the 80s, but made some of their best albums in the 70s, with some of the most exciting blues-influenced rock and roll ever recorded. Read more...
Song: La Grange

Van Halen

One of only five rock bands that have had two albums sell more than 10 million copies in the US. Founding member Eddie van Halen became a true hero for many younger guitar players and their original lineup also featured singer David Lee Roth, who is regarded as one of the biggest showmen in rock.
Song: Ain't Talkin bout Love
